FAQ: FAQ
  • What makes us different from other Insect based treats?
Unlike other insect based treats we breed our own insects here in Devon and don’t import from any other countries thus ensuring we are responsible and in complete control of what our mealworms are fed on. Unlike most other insect based treats in the UK we do not use black soldier fly as we find it to be bitter and our manufacturers find it unpleasant to work with. Mealworms on the other hand have a lovely nutty smell and flavour not dissimilar to crispbread!
  • What type of insects are found in Mr Bug's bug bites?
Our insect based protein is made entirely from mealworms of the darkling beetle species, they are bred and processed right here on our specialised farm in Devon. There are countless benefits of the brilliant mealworm for your pet. Firstly, not only do they provide a highly digestible and nutritious source of protein but they also include all of the essential amino acids and are hugely rich in fibre, potassium and phosphorus.
  • Are mealworms rich in protein?
Mealworm powder has a complete amino acid profile and contains all 10 essential amino acids which must come from food our dogs consume. It contains 53.7g of bioavailable protein per 100g vs 31g in beef meat and 23.1g in chicken meat, which means we would need lesser quantities to be fed to our dogs, to get the same level of protein into the dogs diet, compared to using current standard sources of protein.
  • Is insect protein good for my dog?
Mealworms have a higher nutritional value than beef and chicken, comparable nutritional balance and are a good source of all essential amino acids so our Bug Bites are not only great for the planet, they're great for your pet too. Our formula is protein rich and packed with naturally rich nutrients and antioxidants.
  • Does it hurt the mealworms when they die?
It is important to distinguish between ‘feeling pain’, which is a subjective experience, and ‘nociception’, which is defined as ‘the sensory mechanism that allows animals to sense and avoid potentially tissue-damaging stimuli’. Insects have been proven to experience the latter, but there is still no proof that this means they ‘feel pain’ in the sense that we do. However, we take animal welfare seriously and have implemented a process that is as ethical as possible. Before we dry the mealworms they are stored in a fridge which puts them into a hibernated state.
  • What do vets say about insect protein in pet food?
Insect protein offers a more sensible alternative to owners who want to offer a ‘livestock-free’ diet to their pets rather than homemade vegetarian or vegan diets which often result in poor pet health & welfare – insect-based products are palatable, nutritious and bioavailable” – Simon Doherty, President, BVA, Aug 2019.
  • What is a significant difference between insect and meat protein?
Meat is very high in phosphorous which can cause a severe lack of calcium, magnesium and other essential minerals. Switching to mealworms can reduce these risks as Mealworms contain less phosphorous.
  • Is Mr Bug grain free?
Mr Bug treats do not contain any grain, oats or corn.
  • Will I be able to tell the difference if my dog is fed using mealworm protein?
Mealworms contain essential fatty acids that support the health of dogs skin and coat and they are low in fat which makes them excellent for weight control in dogs and helps to prevent obesity.
  • How many treats can I feed my dog?
There are roughly 10g of protein per biscuit. Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories.
